What to Expect:

If you’ve never had a tarot reading before:

The tarot follows a basic system, similar to playing cards. There are 4 elements that prompt you to consider your situation from an emotional, mental, spiritual or physical point of view. There are 22 additional trump cards that introduce archetypes, characters that give your story depth and prompt you to consider options for action.  If you’ve never had a reading before, we’ll start with a general reading and look at about 11 cards. I’ll explain what the cards mean as well as the significance of the position in which they are placed. We’ll also talk about the total story and what some of the cards can mean when they appear together. It’s also interesting to note which cards don’t appear. For example, a layout without cards that indicate life’s emotional elements may prompt you to consider the ways you may be neglecting your emotions—or deliberately keeping things emotion-free.

What can the tarot reading do for me?

It can prompt you to think about things in a different way. It sounds goofy, but I think of the cards as familiar characters—almost stereotypes—that would act in consistent ways. It’s like when you see a movie with a character in it and you think “I know this character, he’s been in every movie this director has made.” Fairy tales and mythology have many common characters that play roles in stories and transcend time and culture. The ego-ridden king, for example, can come back in contemporary times as an inflexible boss. By measuring your situation against a familiar backdrop you may realize that you understand it more than you think—or that some parts of it are completely unfathomable, and there are simply lessons to be learned.

Can I ask a question?

Of course. It helps to formulate your question beforehand for a shorter reading. If you journal or meditate, I recommend doing that before you get your reading. In a longer session we may do several readings just to determine your question. For example, if you start with “How do I find a new job?”, it could help to ask some harder “why” questions. Why do you want a new job? Is your current one boring? Do you want more money? More flexibility? A boss that’s more of a mentor? More independence? The question can evolve into: “How do I find a new job close to home that will challenge me?” You get more out of the reading if you invest time before and after asking your question.
